Herbs and Plants for Witchcraft: Earth Element Herbs

Please note that posts on this site may contain affiliate links

Earth element herbs are used in many forms of witchcraft including herbalism, divination, spell casting, and ritual work. They are often used to enhance spells and rituals involving the four elements (earth, air, fire, water). The earth element represents the physical world, the ground beneath our feet, the land we live upon.

Many witches believe that the earth element is the most important element to master because it is the foundation of everything. This includes the ability to grow food, create shelter, and maintain life itself.

Witches who practice herbalism use herbs to heal themselves and others. Many herbs are used medicinally and some are used for spiritual purposes.

These Earth element herbs are the perfect addition to spells for grounding, strength, peace, cleansing, and prosperity.

The Earth element is the base element from which all other elements are formed, and thus it is creative and fertile in nature.

DO NOT INGEST THESE PLANTS unless you know for sure that it isn’t poisonous, doesn’t have any pesticides on it, and won’t interact badly with anything else that you have taken or will take.

Be smart and stay safe.

To keep track of the plants you know, make sure you use a Materia Medica.

  • Can be used as an ink for writing love spells. It is also a good blood substitute. Draws in love.

Carrot:

  • Eat carrot seeds when you’re trying to become pregnant. Carrots use the Earth element to increase one’s libido and bolster fertility and lust.

  • Divination, good luck. Also useful in protection. Hang in the home to bring good luck and protect against bad luck.

Cotton:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Moon
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman
  • Brings luck, healing, and protection. Used in rain spells and to increase your bounty while fishing. Planting it will keep ghosts away. Burn it for rain that will heal dry lands. Cloth cotton can be used in rituals.

Cypress:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Saturn
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman or an incense or perfume
  • This plant is associated with death and mourning. It helps to overcome your pain when you’re suffering a loss. Keep near you for times of crisis.
  • Calms you and brings a feeling of tranquility. Hang for protection, burn the wood to understand grief and death (or to help in divination, especially when calling on those who’ve passed on).
  • Carry at funerals to help those attending to process their grief in a helpful way. Throw into the grave to bring luck and love to the deceased.

Fumitory:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Saturn
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman or an incense or perfume
  • Burn this plant to exorcise evil spirits, or sprinkle water infused with it around your home or in your shoes to draw in money. This can also be used in purification baths.
  • Because Fumitory is associated with the Earth element, you can use this plant on Halloween / Samhain to dispel negative energy and purify the spirit. This plant is associated with the underworld.

Horehound:

  • Gender: Male
  • Planet: Mercury
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman
  • This plant is sacred to the god Horus. It has protective properties, and helps to bring mental clarity. It will stimulate your creativity or inspiration and bless your home. Keep it near your doors to keep trouble out of your house. Good for exorcism and healing as well. Will protect against other witches that wish to control you.

Magnolia:

  • Planet: Venus
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman
  • An all-around good plant to keep near, as it is useful for beauty, love, peace, loyalty, health, anxiety, harmony in marriage, and overcoming addictions. It also improves one’s fidelity, and promotes hair growth.

Oleander:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Saturn
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman
  • Italians thought that keeping any part of Oleander in the house would bring sickness and misfortune to the family within. They are, however, used in love spells. Somehow people decided they would be useful for protection, but I personally wouldn’t recommend it.

Patchouli:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Saturn
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman or an incense or perfume
  • Brings in money and love. Use in spells or baths. Put it in your wallet or purse, or sprinkle it onto some dollar bills, to cause money to find you or to stop your spending. As a charm, it increases fertility. Burn to help your business.
  • Can be used to substitute the dirt of a grave in spells.

Pea:

  • Used in love and fertility spells. Increases your self control.

Sage:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Venus
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman or an incense or perfume
  • Purify yourself with this plant. Carry it to improve your mental ability or bring wisdom. Promotes health on all levels. Banishes negative thoughts and energy, and useful in healing spells. The plant absorbs negativity and misfortune, so don’t leave “dirty” sage in your house.
  • If you leave a wish written on a sage leaf beneath your pillow for three nights and then dream of your wish, it will come true.
  • While it’s bad luck to plant sage in your own garden, you can get around this by having someone else plant it for you. It’s best to be planted near other plants or else you will be drawing in misfortune.

Tulip:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Venus
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman
  • Brings in love, prosperity, happiness, dreams and protection. Coordinate the color with the intention of the spell.

Turnip:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Moon

  • Turnip is useful when ending a relationship, to keep the situation from going sour or one party becoming obsessive. Also good for protection.

Vervain:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Venus
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman
  • Vervain was an offering that the Druids used on their altars, so if you’re offering something to an Earth god, this would be a fine plant to choose. Pick at the rising of the Dog Star and the dark of the moon, just before it flowers. Vervain is important to the goddess Diana.
  • Surround a candle with vervain to dispel fears and anxieties. Inspires creativity and makes others love learning, so keep it in your classroom or home if you homeschool.
  • In the bedroom, it will bring good dreams. Wear it as a crown to protect you while doing magic, and sprinkle it throughout your home to bring protection and peace. It will also keep your houseplants healthy.
  • If you and your lover do not have matched libidos, have the one with the most sexual appetite drink the juice of fresh vervain. It will cut their sexual desires, though not completely. It will also bring bliss on one’s wedding night.
  • Vervain is known as The Witch’s Herb. It’s really a generally good herb to use in any ritual, spell or charm.

Wheat:

  • Gender: Female
  • Planet: Venus
  • Uses: Can be used as a charm / talisman
  • A fertility plant. Increases fertility and aids conception, as well as attracting money.
