As a green witch, I have always been drawn to the humble onion. This versatile, common ingredient is often overlooked in the world of magical herbalism, but it has so much to offer in terms of both its healing properties and its use in spells and rituals.

The Healing Properties of Onions

Onions may not be the first herb that comes to mind when thinking about healing, but they have a rich history of medicinal use. They contain flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. This makes them effective in fighting off chronic illnesses like cancer and heart disease.

Their high fiber content also promotes good gut health, making them useful in aiding digestion. In fact, Anglo-Saxons used a combination of onions and sage to help digest rich meats. Onions also have antibacterial properties, and were once used to treat coughs and colds. It was even believed that sniffing an onion could help clear the sinuses.

In addition to their physical health benefits, onions also have spiritual healing properties. In Hellenic Polytheism, onions were used in rituals for purification and protection. They were also believed to have the ability to absorb negative energies and impurities, making them perfect for use in cleansing spells and rituals.

The Magical Properties of Onions

In the world of magic, onions have long been associated with masculine energy and the element of fire. This makes them perfect candidates for use in fertility spells and spells for increasing sexual energy. They are also powerful in protection magic, and can be used to create a barrier of protection around your home.

One way to do this is to grow onions around the perimeter of your property, allowing them to blossom. This will create a protective shield that will keep negative energies at bay. You can also rub your body with an onion to protect against injury.

If your space needs an energetic cleanse, onions can be used to absorb the negativity. Simply quarter an onion and place one segment in each corner of the room. Leave it overnight, then bury each piece outside the following day. Repeat this process for five consecutive days to thoroughly cleanse your space.

Onions can also be used in banishing spells, as their strong smell can be quite offensive to unwanted energies or entities. Simply burn the blossoms of an onion to banish bad habits or to get rid of unwanted houseguests.

One of my favorite uses for onions in magic is in spell bags. To create a spell bag for protection, fill a small cloth bag with onion skins, fresh onion, and a helping of onion powder. Tie it securely and carry it with you to repel negative influences and keep yourself safe.

Incorporating Onions into Your Magical Practice

As a kitchen witch, I find that incorporating onions into my magical practice is quite easy. I use them frequently in my cooking, and simply by using them in my meals, I am infusing my food with their protective, masculine energy.

If you are not a kitchen witch, there are still many ways to incorporate onions into your magical practice. You can create a mixture of onion juice and vodka, and use it to anoint candles or other tools. You can also make a protection oil by infusing onions in a carrier oil, such as olive oil, and using it in your protection workings.

Planetary and Elemental Correspondences

One of the key components of herbal witchcraft is understanding the planetary and elemental correspondences of different herbs and plants. In the case of onions, they are associated with the planet Mars and the element of fire.

Mars is a planet of action, aggression, and physical strength. This makes onions perfect for spells and rituals that involve protection, banishing, and increasing physical strength or vitality. The element of fire is associated with passion, desire, and sexuality, making onions a powerful tool in spells for increasing sexual energy and fertility.

In addition to their association with Mars and fire, onions also have correspondences with other planets and elements. They are associated with the Moon and the element of water, making them useful in spells for emotional healing and cleansing. They are also associated with the Sun and the element of Earth, making them effective in spells for personal growth and success.

Onions and the Chakras

In addition to their planetary and elemental correspondences, onions also have specific correspondences with the chakras. Their association with the heart chakra makes them useful in spells for increasing love and compassion. Their connection to the solar plexus chakra makes them effective in spells for increasing confidence and personal power. And their association with the root chakra makes them powerful in spells for grounding and stability.

Onions In Baneful Magic

While onions are often used in protective and banishing spells, they can also be used in baneful magic. One way to use onions in baneful magic is by creating a poppet out of an onion. To do this, simply carve the name of your target onto an onion, and then place it in a jar or container. Add hot spices, such as chili pepper or cayenne, to the jar to increase the potency of the spell.

Another way to use onions in baneful magic is by creating a curse jar. To do this, fill a jar with fresh onion, black peppercorns, and graveyard dirt. Add a piece of paper with your curse written on it, and then seal the jar. Bury the jar outside to activate the curse.

It is important to note that the use of baneful magic should be approached with caution and responsibility. It is not recommended to use onion magic, or any form of magic, to harm others without just cause.

The Many Uses of Onions in Witchcraft

As you can see, the humble onion has many uses in the world of herbal witchcraft. From its healing properties, to its powerful magical correspondences, the onion is a versatile and powerful herb that every witch should have in their arsenal.

Whether you are a seasoned witch, or just starting out on your magical journey, the onion is a herb that can be easily incorporated into your practice. So the next time you are in the kitchen, don’t forget to include this magical ingredient in your meals, and see the benefits it can bring to your physical and spiritual health.
