Witchy Things To Do In The Month Of October: Halloween is right around the corner. If you haven’t already made plans yet, here’s what I’d recommend doing during the month of October.
October is an important month for most witches. Why? Because this is the month of Samhain. It’s a time when we can honor our ancestors and those who have passed into Spirit by welcoming them back to Earth during this special season, connecting with loved ones through divination practices (like scrying), or just taking some extra time for reflection on life in general since it separates us from death so much most of year.
If you haven’t already started planning your supernatural festivities yet, consider these witchy things to do during October:
1. Go Out Trick Or Treating
If you have children, Halloween is the perfect opportunity to get out with them and enjoy the beauty of autumn. Trick or treating gives you an excuse to let your kids stay up late and play outside in the dark. They also get to meet their neighbors!
2. Have A Witches’ Night Out
If you have witchy friends, get together and go out! This can mean spending a night in the forest, or it can mean bar hopping. It depends on your group and what you all life to do together.
3. Celebrate Samhain
Samhain is a Celtic festival which marks the beginning of winter. As such, it’s often associated with ghosts, mistletoe, and other things connected with the dark side of life. Why not celebrate this ancient holiday by getting together with friends dressed up in their spookiest attire, lighting candles, playing music, and enjoying a few drinks?
4. Create Pumpkin Magick
Pumpkin carving has been one of our favorite fall traditions for years. From jack-o-lanterns to gourds to carved pumpkins, we love creating magickal designs on our pumpkins. With so many different ways to carve pumpkins, there are lots of options for how you want to decorate yours.
Here’s a witch tip: You can carve sigils into your pumpkins too!
5. Try Scrying
Scrying is an old practice that involves staring intently at a reflective surface. This allows us to see visions in our minds eye. For example, when looking through water, you might see images of the future. When looking at crystals, you may see symbols from nature. There are many scrying practices out there; experiment until you find something that works best for you.
6. Watch Horror Movies
Halloween is the perfect time to watch horror movies. Whether you like scary stories or gory ones, there are plenty to pick from. I suggest The Craft!
7. Visit Haunted Houses
Are you looking for something spooky to do on Halloween? Then why not visit a haunted house? Get yourself spooked in a safe and fun way!
8. Have A Family Ghost Hunt
The whole family can participate in a ghost hunt. Find out which rooms have the most paranormal activity, and maybe discover some history along the way.
A seance is a traditional method of communicating with spirits, but it isn’t necessary to hold a seance just to contact those who have passed. You might catch a glimpse of a loved one, or smell their perfume. You don’t need an elaborate ceremony to reach out and connect
9. Host A Dumb Supper
What better way to get into the spirit of Halloween than to host a dumb supper?
A dumb supper is a solemn ritual honoring the dead; it also serves as an opportunity to speak about death and afterlife among friends and family.
Why hold a “Dumb” Supper on Halloween? It’s traditionally known to be the night when the veil separating the physical realm and the spiritual realm is at its thinnest. It’s the night when anything is possible, so why not invite guests over for a bit of mischief and mayhem?
How do you hold a dumb supper? Set a plate for the recently dead or any ancestors you want to honor, and then hold the meal in complete silence.
10. Go Camping!
Camping always makes for an interesting weekend. You can either go as a group, or spread the love among friends and families.
11. Go Hiking
Why don’t you grab your hiking gear and head out into nature? It’s the perfect way to disconnect and appreciate all that the gods have created for us.
12. Pick Apples
Apples are one of my favorite fruits. So why not make apple cider and eat them while watching scary movies?
13. Increase Your Home’s Spiritual Protection
Spiritual Protection can take many forms or a combination of forms. It is when you contact any spiritual guides, angels, gods, or any positive universal powers, invoke an energy shield, or utilize an item.
Spiritual protection is necessary because in this world today there are so many energetic beings searching for an energy source for nourishment, and we need to protect ourselves. If the aura isn’t strong enough or protected, it’ll be easier for these energetic beings to latch onto us, draining us of energy and causing negativity in our lives.
14. Stock Up On Fall Spices
This powerful blend contains cinnamon, cloves, ginger, allspice and nutmeg, which brings forth powerful magickal energy.
The spices traditionally associated with pumpkin spice lattes, cookies, cakes, pies & muffins all carry potent magical associations of elemental fire. These spicy flavors enhance prosperity, passion and fertility.
Stock up and use these fall spices in your home altar. Blow cinnamon into your front door to draw in blessings. Cook up muffins for prosperity.
15. Do A House Cleansing
All Hallow’s Eve and All Saints’ Day are both special occasions for performing ritualistic purification and protective magickal work to safeguard your home and family.
With that said, if you’ve not already done so, it’s definitely worth taking some time to perform a proper house cleansing and blessing right now.
Make an altar with the intention of sending all negative energies (or “spirits”) out of the home. Cleanse the house using sage, salt, crystals, chamomile tea bags, or herbs of purification like lemon grass, cedar wood, rosemary, and bay laurel.
16. Forage For Autumn Ritual Tools
Autumn is my favorite season because it offers an amazing range of craft activities like crafting with leaves, collecting acorn caps and making pine cone crafts. In autumn, nature gives us tons of materials to work with so we don’t have to go anywhere else.
Sticks can be used to make wands. Rocks can be used to make runes. Leaves can be used to create talismans, tarot cards, and amulets. Acorns can be used to serve as fairy altars. And pine cones can be used to create spell components.
17. Collect October’s Full Moon Water
Full moon water is a powerful tool for manifestation rituals. Collecting October’s full moon water will also have the energy of this liminal month.
October’s full moon represents change. This is a very important time of transition, whether it be changes within your life or changes in your relationships. You might feel nervous about change or confused about what direction to take next. But know that everything happens for a reason.
There’s no point in getting upset over things you cannot change; instead, concentrate on staying centered, grounded, and balanced while embracing the opportunities coming your way.
18. Set Up An Ancestor Altar
Ancestors are loved ones who have passed away, but they still live in our memories, in spirit, and in our hearts. They exist as part of our families past, present, and future.
They were once human themselves, so connecting with them can help bring balance to your own life and provide insight into how to manage your emotions. Ancestor altars allow you to connect with their spirits and offer gratitude towards them for helping guide you through difficult times.
Your ancestor altar should have photos or mementos of your ancestors. It is a place to connect with your past and learn about generational trauma that can be healed through you. Remember, when you heal generational trauma, you heal 7 generations in the past and 7 generations in the future.
