Tarot for Goal Setting: Using Cards to Uncover Your True Desires & Potential Obstacles

So I’ve been using tarot for goal setting for years now, and honestly? It’s been a total game-changer for helping me figure out what I actually want versus what I think I should want. Ya know? There’s something about those cards that cuts through all the noise in my head and gets straight to the point.
I’m definitely not some fancy tarot expert or anything. I’ve been reading cards for about 7ish years, so I’ve got the basics down, but I’m still learning new things all the time. That’s kind of the beauty of tarot though – you never really stop discovering new layers of meaning.

Why Tarot Actually Works for Goal Setting
Here’s the thing about tarot that most people don’t get – it’s not really about “telling the future” in that mystical, woo-woo way (though I totally respect if that’s your jam!). It’s more like a psychological mirror that reflects back what’s already inside your head and heart.
When you’re stuck on a goal or can’t figure out what you really want, your logical brain keeps running in circles. But the cards? They bypass all that overthinking and tap directly into your intuition.
I remember last year when I was trying to decide whether to commit to this big project. I kept making pros and cons lists that got me NOWHERE. So I pulled out my cards, did a simple three-card spread, and boom – there was the Tower card staring back at me.
Talk about a wake-up call! It made me realize I was afraid of the necessary changes that would come with the commitment. (I ended up doing it anyway and yes, things got totally shaken up, but in the best possible way).

Choosing the Right Cards and Spreads
If you’re new to this whole tarot-for-goals thing, start super simple. A three-card spread is perfect:
- Current situation
- Challenge/obstacle
- Advice/outcome
For something a bit deeper, I love using the Celtic Cross when I’m really stuck on a complex goal or decision. It gives you so much more context about the influences around your situation.
The thing about interpreting tarot for goals is that you have to get really comfortable with seeing multiple layers in each card, especially when you’re trying to understand how they apply to specific situations like career development or personal projects or relationship goals and how they all interconnect with each other because cards never exist in isolation and the way the Tower might mean something totally different when it’s next to the Star versus when it’s next to the Devil and sometimes you pull a card that seems completely unrelated to your question but then three days later something happens and you’re like OH THAT’S what it meant and honestly that’s the fascinating part of working with the cards over time because they have this way of revealing things gradually rather than all at once which is probably better for most of us anyway since big revelations can be overwhelming and, wait what was I even talking about? Right, spreads for goal setting.
But honestly, don’t get too hung up on doing the “perfect” spread. Sometimes I just pull a single card with a really specific question like “What’s the energy I need to bring to this goal?” and that’s enough.

How to Actually Interpret Cards for Your Goals
When you’re looking at cards for goal setting, pay attention to:
- Your immediate gut reaction (seriously, this matters MORE than what any book says)
- Patterns in the suits (lots of pentacles? Your focus is practical/material)
- Major arcana cards (they represent bigger life themes and lessons)
- Cards that seem to directly contradict your stated goals (these often show hidden obstacles)
I always tell people to follow exactly what the cards say because they contain wisdom beyond what our conscious minds can access!! But actually, that’s not quite right. The better approach is to use them as a guidance system rather than a rulebook. They’re like a good friend giving advice – worth listening to, but you’re still the one in charge of your life.
Practical Steps for Your Goal-Setting Tarot Session
Before you even touch your cards, get clear on your question. “What should I do with my life?” is WAY too broad. Try something like “What goal would bring me the most fulfillment this year?” or “What’s blocking me from making progress on my fitness goals?”
I like to create a little ritual around these readings:
- Find a quiet space
- Light a candle if that’s your thing
- Take a few deep breaths
- Shuffle while focusing on your question
- Pull your cards
Oh! I was going to include a diagram of my favorite goal-clarification spread in this post, but I forgot to take a picture before I shuffled my deck back together. So annoying when I do that! Anyway, it’s similar to a Celtic Cross but with positions specifically for “hidden desires” and “feared outcome.”
The most important part? WRITE DOWN YOUR READINGS. I can’t stress this enough. I have a special journal just for my goal-setting readings, and I revisit them every few months. It’s kinda mind-blowing to see how things unfold over time.
Just Try It Already
So that’s pretty much my take on using tarot for goal setting. It’s been like having a wise counselor in my pocket, helping me see past my own blind spots and recognize patterns I might otherwise miss.
Even if you’re skeptical, what’s the harm in trying? Worst case scenario, you spend some quiet time reflecting on your goals, which is valuable all by itself.
Let me know if you give it a shot! I’m always curious to hear how other people use their cards. Maybe next time I’ll write about using tarot specifically for creative blocks, because that’s a whole other fascinating topic…
Till then!
