Tarot for Tough Times: Self-Care Spreads That Actually Helped Me Cope

So I’ve been turning to my tarot cards A LOT lately when life gets overwhelming – which seems to be pretty much all the time these days, right? I’ve found that certain tarot spreads are just perfect for those moments when you need some clarity or just a little guidance to get through the rough patches. Nothing fancy, just some simple layouts that help me reconnect with myself when everything feels like too much.
I’m not claiming to be some tarot master or anything – I’ve been working with my cards for many years now and I’m still learning something new every time I do a reading. But these spreads have been my go-to lifelines, so I thought I’d share them in case they might help someone else too.

The Simple Three-Card Clarity Spread
When my brain is absolutely spinning and I can’t seem to get perspective, this is my favorite quick spread. So simple, but seriously effective:
- Current situation – what’s actually happening (not just what you think is happening)
- Challenge – what’s blocking you or making things difficult
- Guidance – what you need to focus on to move forward
What I love about this spread is that it cuts through all the noise in my head. Like last month when I was FREAKING OUT about a decision I had to make, the cards reminded me that I was overthinking everything (classic me). The guidance card was the Eight of Cups, which was basically telling me it was time to walk away from something that wasn’t serving me anymore.
Try to sit with each card for a minute before rushing to the next one. And don’t be afraid to really look at what comes up in that challenge position – it’s usually the thing I need to hear most but want to hear least, ya know?
The Self-Care Cross
This is my absolute favorite spread when I’m feeling run down or emotionally drained. It’s a five-card spread that helps me figure out exactly what kind of self-care I actually need (which is rarely what I think I need!):
- Center card – your current emotional state
- Above – what your mind needs
- Below – what your body needs
- Left – what to release
- Right – what to embrace
I use this spread at least twice a month and it’s seriously changed how I approach taking care of myself. I used to think self-care was just about bubble baths and face masks or whatever, but this spread helps me see that sometimes what I really need is to set boundaries or connect with certain people or even just get out in nature and touch some trees.
And I’ve noticed that different phases of the moon can also influence what comes up in this spread – which got me thinking about lunar cycles and how they affect our energy levels and emotional states, which is fascinating when you start researching the historical connections between moon phases and human behavior patterns across different cultures.
I found this old book at a used bookstore that talked about moon gardening techniques from medieval Europe that supposedly enhance plant properties when harvested at specific lunar phases, and it made me wonder if my card readings might be influenced by similar energetic patterns – anyway, the self-care cross is super helpful for getting specific about what kind of nurturing you need.
Oh and I recommend using a deck with really intuitive imagery for this one. Your intuition plays a big role in interpreting what “self-care” means for each position.
(Overwhelmed? Light a virtual candle and take 5 minutes. It actually helps.)

New Moon Renewal Spread
This spread is amazing for those times when you feel like you need a complete reset. I like to do it during the new moon, but honestly it works whenever you’re ready for a fresh start:
- What to release – what’s no longer serving you
- Lesson learned – what you’re taking forward
- New energy – what’s coming in
- Hidden opportunity – something you might not see yet
- Action – one thing you can do now
The hidden opportunity card is always so interesting because it often shows something that’s been right in front of me the whole time. Like when The Star showed up there last time and I realized I’ve been ignoring my creative side for months and that was actually contributing to my feeling of being stuck.
The way The Star channels energy from the heavens and then pours it onto both land and water, symbolizing the connection between conscious and…
Anyway, this spread gives me a roadmap for moving forward when I feel like I’m just trudging through mud. I try to keep the cards somewhere visible for a few days after doing this spread as a reminder.
Shadow Work Spread (When You’re Ready to Go Deep)
Ok so this one is NOT for when you’re feeling super fragile, but when you’re stable enough to look at some harder truths. This is definately my most challenging spread but also the most transformative:
- Surface issue – what you think the problem is
- Deeper issue – what’s actually going on beneath
- Your role – how you’re contributing to the situation
- Fear – what’s really scaring you
- Shadow – aspect of yourself you’re not acknowledging
- Integration – how to accept and work with your shadow
I won’t lie – I’ve cried during this spread alot. But in a good way? That “your role” card can be a tough pill to swallow sometimes. But it’s always, ALWAYS helpful to see where I might be getting in my own way.
The shadow card is actually my favorite part because it often reveals a strength I didn’t know I had, not just negative stuff. Our shadows hold our power too, not just our difficulties.
I recommend having a journal handy for this one and maybe some tea. And definitely don’t do it right before bed unless you want some wild dreams (speaking from experience).

Final Thoughts
So there you have it – my go-to spreads for when life gets messy. The three-card spread is perfect for quick guidance, the self-care cross helps identify what you actually need, the new moon spread gives you a fresh start, and the shadow work spread is there when you’re ready to dig deeper.
Remember that tarot is just a tool for accessing your own inner wisdom. The cards aren’t telling you what WILL happen – they’re helping you see what COULD happen based on current energies. You’re still in the driver’s seat!
I might post some example readings with these spreads at some point if I get around to taking decent photos of my layouts. For now, I hope these help someone out there feeling stuck or overwhelmed.
